The board

Pursuant to the decision of Statnett’s annual enterprise meeting, the Board shall consist of seven to nine members. Two or three members of the Board must be elected by and from among the employees. Statnett’s Board has the following composition:

Per Hjorth

Elected 2008


Hjorth is the President of Newsec Norway and head of the Newsec Nordic executive committee (EC), a consultancy and brokerage firm for commercial properties. Hjorth also serves on a number of boards. He has held a number of managerial positions within industry, finance and the energy sector, including as general manager of Nord Pool ASA until 2000. Hjorth holds a Master of Business and Economics from BI Norwegian Business School, and has served on Statnett’s Board since 2008. He was elected Chairman in 2015.


Synne Homble, Board member

Homble is the Chief officer for strategy and corporate functions in the NSB Group, responsible for strategy, legal affairs, HR and communication.

She comes from a position as executive vice president for legal and corporate functions in the international aquaculture group Cermaq Group AS, where she held various management positions in Cermaq from 2006 – 2016. Prior to that, she was an attorney in the law firm Wikborg Rein from 1998-2006. Homble holds a cand. jur. law degree from the University of Oslo. She is deputy chair of the Statnett SF board of directors, and a member of Norway's OECD national contact point for responsible business.


Maria Sandmark, Board member

Maria Sandsmark has a Ph.D. in political science, and is a researcher with responsibility for socio-economic analyses at Møreforskning Molde AS. She has been a consultant with ECON analysis, responsible for studying socio-economic aspects of deregulated power markets from the perspective of national and international power market players. Sandsmark has been a member of a government-appointed panel of experts tasked with reviewing the framework for socio- economic analyses.


Egil Gjesteland, Board member

Egil Gjesteland is currently the project director of the Gassco Emden project, in addition to running an oil and gas industry consultancy firm, Gjesteland Consulting AS. He is an engineer with a Master of Science from the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), has worked for Statoil in Abu Dhabi, as well as being the IT and project manager for a number of oil and gas projects for Statoil. Gjesteland was the project director of the Snøhvit development in the Norwegian Sea for four years. Gjestland has been a lecturer for the BI MBA program and at UC Berkeley.



Einar Strømsvåg

Strømsvåg is the director of Statoil’s group audit division. He has been with Statoil ASA since 1997, and has held various managerial positions. Strømsvåg has also served on several boards, including the Executive Board of the Confederation of Norwegian Business. He holds a Master of Business and Economics from the Norwegian School of Economics and is also a chemical engineer.


Kirsten Indgjerd Værdal, Board member


Kirsten Indgjerd Værdal

Since 2007, Værdal has been the agricultural director at the office of the county governor of Nord-Trøndelag County. She has held a number of managerial position within the food industry and agricultural sector. Værdal has broad experience from service on boards for organisations, as well as in the public and private sectors. Værdal is an agronomist, with economic and management education.



Nils Ole Kristensen

Kristensen has a master degree in electrical engineering from NTNU Trondheim and started his career in Statnett in 2000. Before that, he was engaged by NVE – the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate. He has held different positions in Statnett, covering tariff design, international consultancy and substation engineering. He also chaired the Statnett branch of Tekna – the Norwegian Society of Graduate Technical and Scientific Professionals – for several years. 



Steinar Jøråndstad, Employee representative


Steinar Jøråndstad

Jøråndstad is an energy technology specialist in Statnett, where he also serves as the President of the EL&IT national labour union, and is a member of the working environment committee. Jøråndstad, who started as an apprentice in 1981, has also served as the chief safety delegate in Statnett. He also serves on the municipal council in Vågå, as well as on the municipality’s executive board.



Karianne Burhol

Burhol is the department manager for construction managers and coordinators of power line projects throughout the country. She has previously held the position of project manager in major development projects. She has also been engaged in work on HSE and quality systems since she was hired by Statnett in 2005. Prior to this, she worked for Hafslund Entreprenør, Viken Energinett and Oslo Energy Konsult. Burhol is a trained electrical power engineer from Oslo College of Engineering and has also studied administrative subjects at BI.
